Recital

We wear the mask that grins and lies,

It hides our cheeks and shades our eyes,—

-Paul Laurence Dunbar

Routine days roll in and reel out

Rising still with open eyes.

One step at a time

Full disguise

Moving slowly to the routine drum,

The beat obscures

Tender hum.

The orchestral opus mutes

Cacophonic clamor

Civil disputes

Of Mind, the player

And Heart, the song

Masked in discord they must

Play on.

With feathered faith and carried hope a

Tireless tune will resound the ring,

Calling

A new dawn to greet

A fresh song to sing.

  1. Your poems are always so vivid. I re read them every time, three or four takes. Just perfect pacing and spacing. You layer details so well. “The beat obscures. Tender hum” in regards to the routine drum is just perfect. Rhythmic.
